A talk with Angela Walker – Textiles Teacher and Weaver

START TIME:  7.00pm

This event is held on Zoom so you need to register to get the zoom details to join us 🙂

Join our TEA ’N CHAT with ANGELA WALKER (plus special guest appearance from Rowan the house Angora!)

We often forget or take for granted where our clothes and other items come from and how they are made, the plants or animals that supply us with everyday essentials and what goes into their production.

There is something so natural and relaxing about working with fibre, creating something from start to finish is truly rewarding. In a fast-paced digital global world, it has never been more important to connect with nature, explore sustainable resources and create something ourselves that is authentic. Fibre arts have been used throughout history and in all cultures for various purposes from clothing and warmth to adornment and demonstration of wealth to communicating messages, emotions or meaning such as more recent political forms such as yarn bombing and protest textiles.

Angela will talk about starting with fibre, from collecting it yourself, the processes involved such as carding and spinning (the different types), through to weaving (different looms) and needle felting that can be used in an arts based or fashion context. She will cover how this can be incorporated into the classroom and workshops or extra-curricular activities.

 Angela Walker

Angela currently works as a Textiles, Art and D&T Teacher (plus a little French GCSE!) as well as running a few workshops, volunteering and making the occasional fashion clothing request.

Angela has an MA in Fashion and Textiles, though initially started a global corporate career in law and politics, but always took her sewing machine and paints with her.

Wanting to still pursue fashion and textiles, Angela moved into a legal department in a fashion company as a Quality Controller, then a Garment Tech, later moving into FE teaching and interpreting before becoming a teacher in secondary schools in the UK during covid.

Angela is also a member of a local Textiles group and volunteers with organisations such as Mind (running art and textile workshops), local sensory charities and demonstrates weaving techniques at events like Wool at Junction 13. She keeps her own Angora and uses the fibre to card, spin, weave and felt herself.

The Textiles Skills Centre Associates are a team of volunteers that manage the social media platforms and website, and offer support, mentorship and advice to textile teachers and trainees. We organise free resource networking events each month (Tea ‘N Chat) and are always on hand to help and encourage when needed.
We are always looking for new Associate members, so if you would like to join this small team then do contact us at: info@textileskillscentre.com

At the moment all costs are met by our team and time is given freely. If you are able to support us with a donation, however small, this will help to enhance the work we are doing.

You can donate using the DONATION button below which will take you to the Paypal donations page, or select an amount when you book the event. All donations gratefully received.
