FREE RESOURCE: FIBRES & FABRICS
We are offering these resources free of charge, but if you would like to donate to our ongoing support of textiles education, we would really appreciate it. Textiles Skills centre is managed by a small team of volunteers, who develop free resoures and support teachers through the Textiles Teachers Centre and other networking activities.
A Donation of £20 (per teacher) would mean that we can pay for the website and newsletter costs, as well as having some funds to pay for travel to important meetings to represent teachers.
At the moment all costs are met by our team and time is given freely. Your donations, however small, will help to enhance and continue providing this support and resources.

Julia Burrows
BA Fashion Design; L3 Award in Education & Training(RQF)
Julia studied fashion design and garment construction at the Faculty of Clothing Design, in Durban, South Africa. She started her career as designer and pattern cutter for men’s and ladies’ leisurewear, then moved on to become Senior Designer, which involved running several sample and pattern cutting rooms. She designed men’s and ladies surf and swimwear ranges, a menswear brand range “Rifle”, and set up her own ladies’ wear shop and production unit, before moving to the UK.
In the UK, Julia worked for a Marks & Spencer supplier, as Senior Designer of woman’s lingerie and nightwear, and also oversaw a children’s nightwear range. She later moved to London to become Head Designer for a men’s, ladies’ and children’s leisurewear range. More recently Julia has become a freelancer, working with small start-ups advising on the industry, specialist finance management, design feasibility, fabric and pattern cutting.
In 2016 she moved into teaching post 16 adult education, at the Fashion Technology Academy in North London. As senor tutor there, she developed training programmes and taught Pattern Cutting and Design.
Julia brings a wealth of industry experience to her students and enjoys passing on this knowledge to the next generation.
Nicky Simpson
PGCE; BA(Hons) Textiles Design: Specialising in print.
Nicky has been a Textile and Fashion consultant for the Textiles Skills Academy for 5 years now, she also works as a contemporary textile artist, her artwork combines all things textural, she likes to craft with a heat press featuring both machine and hand embroidery, delivering tutorials in her small studio. Nicky’s initial career was in the fashion industry working for 22 years in the heart of London as a print designer and colourist. She worked for a French mill based in Lyon and went on to create seasonal fashion print collections, buying and redesigning archive prints. Nicky designed for all the high street stores from Marks and Spencer to River Island.
Nicky’s second career was in teaching as Head of Fashion & Textiles at Hillview School for Girls in Kent. She has taught Art & Design Textiles at GCSE and A Level, AQA Design and Technology/Textiles at A Level and GCSE and BTEC Level 3 Fashion. Her last set of grades were: A Level 100% A-A*; GCSE 70% A-A* (100% A*-B).
Nicky has mentored many graduate trainees, taken workshops at the Knitting & Stitching show, volunteers as an art therapist and now presents the workshops to fellow Textile and Art teachers on behalf of the Textile Skills Academy.
