Join us for a FREE Tea ‘N Chat with Textile artist and teacher LINDA HARVEY who talks about her work.
We are excited to have the immensely talented mixed-media textile artist Linda Harvey join us for our April Tea ‘N Chat event. With over 25 years of experience in both teaching and creating, Linda brings a deep well of knowledge and a true passion for her craft. As the Head of Textiles at Archbishop Holgate’s School in York and a dedicated member of York Textile Artists and The Society for Embroidered Work, Linda’s commitment to her art is truly inspiring.
Linda’s artwork is a mesmerizing fusion of rustic textures and innovative techniques. Drawing inspiration from her travels, she transforms photographs into expressive, abstract textile creations. Her work beautifully reflects her love for color and texture, incorporating elements such as hand-felted backgrounds, free-motion embroidery, intricate layering, and rust dyeing.

LINDA HARVEY Textile Artist and Head of Textiles at Archbishop Colgate School, York
Linda studied Textiles and Surface Design at University Centre Somerset, graduating in 1994. She is a textile artist and Head of Textiles at a York secondary school and a member of York Textile Artists and The Society for Embroidered Work, which promotes and supports the best in stitched art worldwide.
The inspiration for her work mainly comes from the places she visits, taking photographs of anything that catches her eye. These photographs give a starting point from which her work evolves, often working on several pieces at a time, as she enjoys an expressive and experimental way of working.
Linda is inspired by rustic textures and the ageing process, drawn to anything corroded and tarnished and immediately seeing how it can be turned into a textile art piece. Colour and texture are the key elements in her work.

Mounting and Presenting Students Work
Join us for a session on developing a great sketchbook with Nicky Simpson. Student sketchbooks will demonstrate their creative process, showing initial ideas, links to artists/designers to development of ideas.
How can your students ‘demonstrate the ability to construct a sustained line of reasoning, which is coherent, relevant, substantiated and logically structured’, in their sketchbook.
How can a student present ‘all their knowledge, skills, understanding and activities relevant to their creative journey’.
The sketchbook should demonstrate a ‘substantive, focused project, a progression of ideas rather than a series of disjointed tasks, and work should evidence all the Assessment Objectives holistically as well as cover the chosen areas of study’.
- What is the best way to mount and present students work?
- How can students work independently in their sketchbooks
- Where and how to present annotation
- How to cover all the assessment objectives
- How to make connections to artists and designers, primary, mark making and developed work.
Nicky will show examples of good sketchbooks and how to get students inspired and presenting their work in a coherent and expressive way.
Your students are welcome to join the session, so please do get them to register.

A talk with Angela Walker – Textiles Teacher and Weaver
TUESDAY 14TH MAY

FREE EVENT HELD ON ZOOM
This event is held on Zoom so you need to register to get the zoom details to join us 🙂

Join our TEA ’N CHAT with ANGELA WALKER (plus special guest appearance from Rowan the house Angora!)
We often forget or take for granted where our clothes and other items come from and how they are made, the plants or animals that supply us with everyday essentials and what goes into their production.
There is something so natural and relaxing about working with fibre, creating something from start to finish is truly rewarding. In a fast-paced digital global world, it has never been more important to connect with nature, explore sustainable resources and create something ourselves that is authentic. Fibre arts have been used throughout history and in all cultures for various purposes from clothing and warmth to adornment and demonstration of wealth to communicating messages, emotions or meaning such as more recent political forms such as yarn bombing and protest textiles.
Angela will talk about starting with fibre, from collecting it yourself, the processes involved such as carding and spinning (the different types), through to weaving (different looms) and needle felting that can be used in an arts based or fashion context. She will cover how this can be incorporated into the classroom and workshops or extra-curricular activities.
This event is held on Zoom so you need to register to get the zoom details to join us 🙂
Angela Walker
Angela currently works as a Textiles, Art and D&T Teacher (plus a little French GCSE!) as well as running a few workshops, volunteering and making the occasional fashion clothing request.
Angela has an MA in Fashion and Textiles, though initially started a global corporate career in law and politics, but always took her sewing machine and paints with her.
Wanting to still pursue fashion and textiles, Angela moved into a legal department in a fashion company as a Quality Controller, then a Garment Tech, later moving into FE teaching and interpreting before becoming a teacher in secondary schools in the UK during covid.
Angela is also a member of a local Textiles group and volunteers with organisations such as Mind (running art and textile workshops), local sensory charities and demonstrates weaving techniques at events like Wool at Junction 13. She keeps her own Angora and uses the fibre to card, spin, weave and felt herself.
