Become A Great Textiles Teacher (BAGTT) Programme

Textiles Skills Centre has been awarded a grant from All Saint Educational Trust for a second year, to run the 1 year programme supporting teachers, technicians and trainees to Become A Great Textiles Teacher (BAGTT). The Grant is match funded by Textiles Skills Centre.

If you are an ECT/NQT/trainee teacher; a non-specialist teacher or transferring courses and in need of textiles skills training; a technician working in textiles classrooms, this could be the support you need.

This programme is aimed at teachers and technicians, delivering/supporting GCSE Art & Design or D&T Textiles. 50 teachers will be supported on this programme, each participant receiving targeted mentorship and CPD training, delivered by experienced Art & Design/D&T textiles teachers and leaders.

Textiles Skills:
This is a totally practical day doing a large variety of Textile Techniques.
The course is aimed at Art & Design & D&T Textiles teachers, NQT/ECTs and technicians, but open to anyone wanting to add to their resources by spending a whole day developing exciting new ideas for textiles techniques, linked to a large variety of relevant artists and designers.

Essential Manufacturing Skills:
Face-To-Face course will cover learning how to use (and thread;)) the domestic sewing machine and overlocker, simple seams, simple making skills such as bagging out and putting in a zip, appliqué and binding.
The course is aimed at D&T Textiles teachers, NQT/ECTs and technicians, but open to anyone wanting to learn basic sewing skills and how to teach them at KS3 to GCSE level.

Blended Learning Course (ONLINE-LIVE):

Planning, Assessment & Progression Courses for D&T and Art & Design Textiles GCSE:
These are blended learning courses *ONLINE LIVE* covering 4 different specifications at GCSE Level: AQA, Edexcel (Pearson), OCR & Eduqas (WJEC) for each of the D&T and Art Textiles courses.
The courses are designed to be interactive and there are several tasks to complete during the day as well as a personal assignment on ‘promoting textiles in your school’, which can be completed in your own time. Many exemplars and guides are included on the course and can be downloaded for future use. The course includes resources to take away with you including: Printable student guides; downloadable teacher guides & presentations; variety of useful templates including Scheme of Work templates.

All courses are open to anyone, including those on the BAGTT programme.
We also have a limited number of part-funded places for these courses if you are self-funding, because school cannot support you financially.

BAGTT PARTICIPANT COMMITMENTS:
If you agree to join the programme you need to commit to attending all CPD training, completing an online training course, and other online sessions, which will support you to becoming a confident and competent textiles teacher.
Programme joining fee:  £50
There is a joining fee to ensure commitment to the programme. The programme will start in September 2023 and run for 12 months and includes the following commitments from each participant:

  • Live Online Curriculum Planning day
  • Online On-Demand courses:
    • Textiles Skills Course
    • Sustainability & Climate Change in Textiles Education course
  • Online Live 1 hour Sessions on:
    • Positive Wellbeing session
    • Health & Safety session
    • Resource Wisely short course
  • F2F Local Networking Events: ‘Meet ‘N Share’ – Assessment & Moderation Strategies
  • Mentorship programme
  • Online Networking Platform
For the selected 50 teachers all the above, will be free, after initial payment of the joining fee.
The Face-to-Face courses (2) will be held in Midlands and South of the country – you will need to select which one is best for you to attend. We will be running the courses in the Autumn and Spring terms at different venues, so there is plenty of opportunity to do the F2F training.
The online on-demand course you select can be done over the 12 month period, so you may choose to do it during the holidays?
The short 1 hour sessions will be held on Tuesday/Wedensday evenings starting at 7.00pm.
